City Council Special Meeting - Feb 08 2021

The U.S. has carried out an air strike against Iran-backed militia in Syria. President Biden ordered the strike in eastern Syria following a series rocket attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq. One of those strikes killed a contractor and left several Americans hurt. It's the first time Biden has taken military action since taking office last month.        The Equality Act is headed to the Senate after passage by the House on Thursday. The Democratic measure prohibits discrimination against people based on sexual orientation and gender identity.        COVID-19 hospital admissions have dropped over 70 percent in the last month. The CDC says Americans over 85 saw the most significant fall in hospitalizations from last month at 81 percent. But they also note that every age group saw admission decreases of at least 57 percent. It comes as vaccinations nationwide are starting to rapidly increase.        The FAA is fining Boeing a total of about six-point-six million dollars for multiple issues. Five-point-four million of the fine comes from failing to meet the terms of a settlement reached in 2015. One-point-21 million is being levied to settle two other safety-related issues. In one of the cases, the FAA accuses Boeing of not following quality control processes and subjecting some staff tasked with certification of the 787 Dreamliner to "undue pressure."        A library at the University of Michigan is back open after three venomous spiders were found. A professor on campus identified them as a species that typically hitchhike with travelers, only found in 22 states. The spiders are believed to have tunneled into the basement. One bite is enough to start necrosis, which is the eating away of the flesh. Crews had to shut the library for two days to clean.
