RI Legislative Black and Latino Caucus congratulates Rep. Alzate and Sen. Cano for appointments to NHCSL

STATE HOUSE – The RI Legislative Black and Latino Caucus is congratulating Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket) and Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) for being appointed by the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) to serve on two of its important national task forces.

Representative Alzate has been appointed to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Government, Social Justice and Taxation Task Force and Senator Cano has been appointed to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Business, Economic Development, International Relations and Trade Task Force.

“The RI Legislative Black and Latino Caucus proudly congratulates two of our members for receiving two prestigious appointments that will help better serve Rhode Island’s Latino community for years to come.  Representative Alzate and Senator Cano’s appointments to these vital national task forces will allow them to discuss and collaborate on the most pressing issues facing the Latino community today with other Latino legislators from across the nation, learning what works and what doesn’t and how to best advocate for the best-interests and needs of Latinos in Rhode Island.  This is a proud day for all of Rhode Island’s Latino residents and we are eager to see what Rep. Alzate and Sen. Cano bring back from their work on these two task forces,” said members of the Caucus.

NHCSL was founded in 1989 as a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3).  Its mission is to be the foremost organization serving and representing the interests of Hispanic state legislators from all states, commonwealths and territories of the United States and the Western Hemisphere.

The NHCSL meets its mission by serving as a catalyst for joint action on issues of common concern, such as housing, immigration, education, economic development, broadband expansion and healthcare, to all segments of the Hispanic community. In addition, NHCSL provides a forum for information exchange and member networking; supports leadership training; acts as a liaison with sister U.S. Hispanic organizations; promotes public and private partnerships with business and labor; and partners with Hispanic state or provincial legislators and their associations represented throughout the world.

The Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus, chaired by Representative Alzate, represents and advocates for the interests of disadvantaged people throughout the State of Rhode Island. It seeks to increase a diverse participation and representation in all levels of government. The goal is to close, and ultimately to eliminate, disparities that still exist between white and non-white Americans in every aspect of life.
