City Council Regular Meeting - Nov 20 2023

The first U.S. moon landing since 1972 is successful. Houston-based Intuitive Machines guided its Odysseus lander onto the moon Thursday. The lander will collect data needed by NASA, which is planning to land near the moon's south pole later this decade.        Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he doesn't want to be Donald Trump's running mate. The former GOP presidential candidate said Wednesday that he's looking at other options, not long after Trump said DeSantis was on a short list of potential candidates for vice president. DeSantis also said he wasn't ruling out a 2028 run for the White House.       A former FBI informant who was arrested last week for lying about President Biden and his son has been re-arrested. Alexander Smirnov falsely told the FBI both President Biden and his son Hunter received five-million-dollar bribes from Ukraine, and last week he was charged with making false statements. On Thursday, a California judge decided Smirnov is a flight risk, and ordered him to be re-arrested.        Wall Street is closing with stocks sharply higher. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both closed at record highs. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 456 points to 39-069. The S&P 500 rose 105 points to 50-87. The Nasdaq grew 460 points to 16-041.        President Biden's dog Commander bit U.S. Secret Service personnel in at least 24 incidents at the White House and other locations. The newly released internal documents say the bites happened between October 2022 and July 2023. One senior agent said the dog situation forced the Secret Service to change tactics, advising agents to "give lots of room" to the animal.        It looks like Olympic champion gymnast Gabby Douglas won't be making her return to competition just yet. Douglas was set to compete at the Winter Cup in Louisville on Saturday, but she withdrew from the competition due to a positive COVID test. Douglas posted that she was "so excited to get back out on the competition floor" and she's "crushed" to miss it.
